Activities

State Garden - Located in St. Denis at the end of rue de Paris, the State Garden, or Jardin de l’Etat, was created by the French botanist Nicolas Bréon in 1877. The park contains hundreds of exotic plants and trees in an area of over 12 acres. St. Gilles - About 12 miles south of the port is the seaside resort of St. Gilles. Its beach is popular with European tourists and young surfers. In addition to watersports centers, there are shops offering beach and resort wear, as well as several small cafés and restaurants. Volcano Museum - Officially called La Maison du Volcan, the museum is located near the Piton de la Fournaise volcano. Exhibits provide firsthand knowledge on worldwide volcanism and in particular about Réunion’s volcano, one of the most active in the world. To visit the volcano and the museum requires a long drive and a full-day trip. (The museum is closed on Mondays.) Beaches - The best beaches are found in and around St. Gilles; snorkeling and scuba diving are available there.
