U by Uniworld - Sara Matulonis and Montana Fee - Amsterdam
Montana and Sara in Amsterdam, Netherlands, during a food tour of the city's Jordaan district.

U by Uniworld is different…in the best way possible. Cruise Planners Account Executive Montana and Digital Storyteller Sara had the opportunity to sail on The A’s inaugural sailing, starting in Amsterdam, Netherlands and ending in Frankfurt, Germany. Both have river cruised before on other cruise lines with their families, and both agree that U gives the rivers that fresh vibe that appeals to a younger demographic.

Below, Montana and Sara have answered some of the most frequently asked questions Cruise Planners has heard from travelers interested in U by Uniworld. Be sure to also check out Montana’s interview with Ellen Bettridge, President and CEO of Uniworld, which features some video footage from the trip.

What is the food like on U by Uniworld?

AH-mazing. Seriously, the food is delicious. The idea of having brunch instead of a huge breakfast and lunch is brilliant and dinner is just one loudly exclaimed “MMM” after another. Brunch is the perfect mix of healthy and indulgent items, always with some delicious, fresh smoothies that will have you feeling like you’re the healthiest person ever (okay, okay, maybe we exaggerated on that one). Dinner consists of a combination of small bites, salad, soup, an entrée and a dessert. Everything is brought out as shared plates and it was always the perfect portion, no have-to-unzip-my-pants-after-the-buffet vibes here.

What clothing should I pack for my U by Uniworld cruise?

The onboard atmosphere is casual, so your wardrobe can be as stylish or dressed down as you want to make it. After getting back to the ship each day, we either went straight to dinner or changed into our comfortable-yet-cute dinner attire and sat on the rooftop deck as the sun went down, having a glass of champagne or a Moscow mule and taking in the surrounding scenery before heading down to dinner. Though the most low-key part of the day, these were some of our favorite moments and photo ops from the trip. Weather is a finicky thing, so be sure to pack warmer layers for the nights you’re out in town and an umbrella or rain jacket for potential showers.

U By Uniworld What to Pack

Pro-tip: The bathrooms only have a shampoo-conditioner combo, so ladies (and gents), pack your conditioner! There’s a hairdryer in the stateroom so you don’t have to worry about that.

What are the U Hosts like on U by Uniworld?

We loved our U Hosts, they definitely made the trip extra special. They’re part travel guide, part friend and all-around fun. They were from the areas we visited, so they knew the best places to go when we wanted to “get lost” on our own or visit a local bar after a tour. The rest of the onboard staff was also awesome, including the front desk staff who didn’t get frustrated at our indecisiveness about which tours we wanted to sign up for, the dining room staff who were excited to hear about our days and the bartenders who never judged us for ordering late night hot dogs…every night.
