3	Wednesday, 9/4/13	About Edinburgh Steeped in tradition and culture, Edinburgh enchants visitors with its medieval castles and green rolling hills. Edinburgh Attractions Some of the city's greatest treasures can be found in Old Town along the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Palace, the city's oldest structure and Holyrood Palace, Queen Elizabeths Scottish residence. Edinburgh Activities Scottish National War Memorial - The Memorial commemorates some 100,000 Scots who died in World War II. Holyrood Abbey - Located next to Holyroodhouse Palace, the abbey was once the site for royal marriage ceremonies and the burial place of Scottish royalty. It was founded in 1128 by David I; according to legend he built it as a penance for hunting on a holy day. Until 1880 debtors and delinquents found refuge here once they had crossed the sanctuary line. St. Giles High Kirk - It is also known as St. Giles Cathedral. John Knox, leader of the Protestant Reformation in Scotland, preached his fiery sermons here from 1559 to his death in 1572. Built between the 14th and 15th centuries, the church was greatly altered in the 16th century. Its dominant feature is the crown-shaped spire. The colors of famous Scottish regiments decorate the interior. Royal Museum of Scotland - It is ranked among the finest of Britain’s comprehensive museums. Its exhibits range from prehistoric times to the space age; they encompass decorative arts of the world, archaeology, ethnography, natural history, geology, technology and other sciences. John Knox Museum - This 16th-century house was built by the famous preacher and theologian. The oak floors and ornately painted ceiling are original. Displays illustrate the building and development of the house from its beginning to the present. Scott Monument - Located in East Princes Street Gardens, it features a marble statue of the author at its base. Towering above is a 200-foot gothic spire adorned with characters from Scott’s novels and poems. Scottish Whisky Heritage Center - Located on the Castle Hill section of the Royal Mile, it has exhibits offering a lowdown on all aspects of Scotland’s national beverage. View a film showing the process of production and blending, or look in the shop which provides a good idea of the range and diversity of whisky with dozens of different brands for sale. St.Andrews - Known foremost as a mecca for golf enthusiasts, the town of St. Andrews offers visitors attractive alternatives to golfing. It is home to the legendary Old Course Hotel, with its famous Road Hole Grill. The distance to St. Andrews is 55 miles each way. A visit is possible by private car/van. Edinburgh	8:00am	6:00pm
4	Thursday, 9/5/13	About Lerwick Besides its dramatic Shetland Islands scenery, Lerwick is close to Jarlshof, an important archaeological site, Scalloway Castle and the island of Foula, the haunt of countless seabirds. Lerwick Activities Fort Charlotte - This impressive structure dates back to 1665 and was designed as a Cromwellian stronghold to protect the Sound of Bressay from invasion during the Anglo-Dutch War. 6	Saturday, 9/7/13	About Akureyri Akureyri were the sandbanks that projected into the harbour; in earlier times there were no fewer than five of those. Four have now disappeared, however, owing to the diligence of the Akureyri people in reclaiming land from the sea. The northernmost one, Oddeyri Point, is still in place, though, and a clear landmark in the town. It was in the inner harbour, in the safe shelter of Oddeyri Point, that the merchants of earlier times preferred have their ships lie at anchor. And the harbour depth allowed the largest vessels to anchor in close proximity to the shoreline so that a fully laden rowing boat would reach land within a few minutes. Akureyri Activities Laxadulshus, the town's oldest residence dates from 1795 and houses a fascinating display on the town's history and a pleasant cafe The many churches are a source of interest. Logmannshlio church more than rewards the climb, while Akureyrarkirkja boasts a splendid 3200-pipe organ The locals are proud of the botanic gardens and you'll be amazed at the variety of flowers that are nurtured in these northern climes Kjarnaskogur, within an hour of the town, is Iceland's most visited forest. Enjoy its extensive leisure facilities, its breathtaking walks and fantastic ski slopes. They landed at Smoky Bay where the first settlement of Reykjavik was established around 870 AD. The name Reykjavik, or "Smoky Bay," refers to the numerous geysers emanating from the thermal springs beneath the capital. Today, Reykjavik is a modern city but its past is preserved at many fine museums including the Arbaejarsafn. Reykjavik Attractions A trip to Reykjavík would not be complete without a trip to the pools, which are open all year round. The best time of the day to go is definitely in the early morning (between 7 and 8 o'clock), when people gather before going to work to discuss current events. There's no better way to check the pulse of the city and to hear some gossip while you're at it. Reykjavik Activities For an exciting sea adventure, visitors to Reykjavík are encouraged to try one of the many whale watching tours that operate along the harbour The Blue Lagoon is probably the most recognizable feature of what Iceland has to offer visitors. 11	Thursday, 9/12/13	About St. John St. John, the oldest incorporated city in Canada, is a fishermans paradise. In September and October the whole countryside is ablaze with some of the most magnificent color in all of North America. St. John Attractions Experience the amazing Reversing Falls Rapids, Saint John's best-known attraction. Twice daily the powerful tides of the Bay of Fundy rise faster than the river can empty. When this happens, the tide attempts to push the river back upstream, then the tide ebbs and the river appears to reverse itself and flow over the rocks, creating the appearance of reversing rapids. St. John Activities Visit the historic Trinity Anglican Church, which dates from 1877, when the original structure was destroyed in the Great Fire. Shop at your leisure in the antique and specialty shops located along Prince William Street, then through the Old City Market on Germain Street. Downtown, you can explore Kind Square and walk past the Imperial Theater, Old Country Courthouse and the Loyalist Burial Grounds. Visit St. Martin's Sea Caves and Beach, where you'll see caves carved out by the pounding tides, as well as the rock-covered beach. St. Martins' twin-covered bridges, harbor area and lighthouse are favorites with photographers and painters. Explore Fort Howe, built in 1777 to serve as both protection for the harbor and as the city jail. 13	Saturday, 9/14/13	About Halifax The capital of Nova Scotia, Halifax is a charming mix of old and new. This is readily apparent in a walk around the area known as the Historic Properties. Enjoy the splendor of one of the finest harbors in the world by taking a water tour of the city. Halifax Attractions One of the city's most attractive areas is the Historic Properties Development, located along the waterfront. The charming early 19th-century wood and stone buildings here have all been fully restored. And the cobblestone streets and long boardwalks are now lined with a wonderful array of boutiques, cafés, and pubs. Halifax Activities Relax on a drive through the beautiful Nova Scotian countryside to the moody, weathered village of Peggy's Cove. Walk along the rocks to view the craggy coastline with its bold glacier-formed outcroppings of granite and its impressive lighthouse. Then drive through the softer South Shore area back to Halifax, and enjoy another view of the city. Take a historical and anecdote-filled tour through the streets of Halifax.
