Cartagena

Cartagena

Walls built in the 17th century divide this prosperous city into "new" and "old" sections. Distinctive thick-walled houses with high ceilings and central patios typify the Iberian architecture found in the charming older district with its narrow and crooked streets.

Activities

  • Relax and enjoy an entertaining show of folkloric music and dance at the beautifully restored Heredia Theater.

  • Ascend the city's tallest hill to the magnificent La Popa Monastary, from where you'll enjoy a spectacular view of the harbor with its unique mix of ancient forts and modern hotels and high-rises.

  • Sail the bay in an authentic replica of a Spanish Galleon as guides regale you with tales both tall and true.

  • Inside the walls of the old city you'll find the gracefully ornate Church of San Pedro Claver, built in 1603 and later dedicated to the patron saint of Columbia.

Shopping

Visit the local vendors and boutiques at the famous Pierino Gallo shopping center where you'll find all the leather goods, coffee and emeralds a pirate could want.

Currency

The Colombian Peso is the currency in Colombia (Columbia, CO, COL).
